Informed Consent to Participate as a Human Subject in Social/Behavioral Research Chapman University One University Dr. Orange, CA 92866 You are being invited to participate in a research study. Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Please read the information below and ask questions about anything that you do not understand. STUDY LOCATION: Economic Science Institute, Wilkinson Hall, Chapman University or Online RESEARCH PROCEDURES: This research is being conducted to study the economics of decision-making. Unless otherwise notified, this experiment will last up to 120 minutes. You will be invited to participate online or in person. In addition to the minimum of $7 for showing up on time and participating, you will be paid based upon your decisions and the decisions of others who are in the experiment. You are free to ask any questions about how you will be paid. Any earnings beyond your $7 for showing up on time can only be paid upon completion of the experiment. Earnings and your show up fee for online experiments will be paid electronically upon completion of the experiment. If you agree to participate you will be asked to make decisions at a terminal in a computer laboratory or online on your own computer. RISKS: As with any study involving collection of data, there is the possibility of breach of confidentiality of data. Every precaution will be taken to secure participants’ personal information to ensure confidentiality. If collecting IP addresses or mac information, participants will be notified ahead of time. Use of such information would only be temporarily stored to aid with any technical difficulties should they arise. BENEFITS: There are no direct personal benefits for participation. PARTICIPATION: You must be 18 or over to participate. Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time and for any reason. There are no costs to you or any other party. There are also no effects of participating or not participating in this study on your grade. CONFIDENTIALITY: All electronic files will be saved confidentially on the ESI password-protected and access-restricted local area network. No person-identifiable information will be reported in any published or unpublished work. The data is protected in the local area network as secured by the Chapman University login procedures. Access is restricted to the professors and trained graduate students associated with the Economic Science Institute. Person-identifiable information will be securely stored and deleted when deemed necessary. Non-person identifiable data may be made publicly available.
